Abstract
The Munich conference of September 1938 had sharply increased the influence of Nazi Germany in Czechoslovakia. One of its consequences was the rise to power in Carpathian Russia of the leaders of the regional ukrainian movement headed by the Greek-Catholic priest A. Voloshyn. By relying on the armed structures of the ukrainian nationalists, the regime of Voloshyn had implemented the violent ukrainization of Rusyns (who hadn’t identified themselves as Ukrainians) in Carpathian Russia; at the same time, in order to combat the representatives of the regional carpatho-russian movement, a massive repression and concentration camps had been introduced. In this way, the violent ukrainization of Rusyns in Carpathian Russia was one of the direct consequences of the Munich conference of 1938.
